Car AC Repair

An air conditioner not only cool cools your vehicle but also reduces humidity or moisture content inside the car. All AC works in the same fashion whether they are installed in the house or car. AC utilizes a refrigerant which is used to take the heat out of a space and during this process it changes phase from liquid to gas such as Freon gas. It changes into liquid when compressor compresses it. This is how your car AC works.

When you turn on AC it utilizes energy from an alternator which is supplied by the engine which consumes fuel from your fuel tank. So, car AC results in more fuel consumption.

The compressor, condenser, evaporator and the fan are the key parts of the AC and play a very important role in cooling your car. Compressor absorbs power from the car engine shaft and the fan motor is powered by the car battery or sometimes dynamo fitted in the engine. If you notice any fault in any of the parts, it is advisable to go for car AC repair.

What are the faults for which Car AC Repair is needed?

When car AC does not cool it and produces heat, car AC repair is needed. The root cause of AC faults is due to:

  • Shortage of refrigerant: As AC continues to run refrigerant loss occurs slowly. When it crosses the minimum level, the refrigerant is to be refilled. This is also done in repair shop if recharge kit and necessary expertise are not available in-house.
  • Check if the radiator cooling fan is running properly. If it is not, there may be an electrical issue. Fan motor to be checked and may need repair or replacement in such case.
  • You may need to replace the cabin air filter in your vehicle to increase air flow.
  • Check for AC compressor condition. You will need to check if the air conditioner compressor is working or it requires repairs. There is a clutch that engages when the air conditioner is working. With the clutch engaged, the middle pulley will rotate along with the pulley itself.
  • If the clutch does not engage, the compressor may be broken and require replacement.
  • Wiring need to be checked which is leading to the AC compressor. Most compressors have a wire leading to the electric clutch. Find the connector in the middle of that wire and unplug it. If the connection is not ok, it will need to be replaced.
  • Leakage in AC to be detected by leak detection kits. If leakage is spotted, you will need to take the vehicle for repairs.
  • If the problem is simply due to a low refrigerant, refilling will be necessary.

Refilling the Refrigerant:

Turn on the refill valve until the seal is punctured. Turn it on in a clockwise direction and keep it open until it perforates the top and refrigerant begins to release through the hose and into the vehicle’s air conditioning system.

  • Correct specification of refrigerant to be procured. All vehicles built after 1995 use R134a. If your vehicle is the older model, it likely used R12.
  • Thermometer to be checked for the ambient temperature. To read the gauge on the refrigerant, you need to know the current ambient temperature. Refrigerant occupies a definite space within the can and air conditioning system at different temperatures, causing the gauge reading differently. A thermometer may need to be repaired if required.
  • Lower side service port to be located and cleaned properly. It must be ensured that the can is not leaking if you opt to store it.
